"I'm late! I'm late, for a very important date! No time to say 'hello,' goodbye! I'm late, I'm late, I'm late!"
-The White Rabbit, Disney's Alice in Wonderland (1951)

Did you know that watches have been around for more than 500 years? The first was designed by a lock maker around the year 1500. For the first time in history, people were able to tell the time of day by a means other than looking at the position of the sun. These early watches did not use batteries - they had to be wound daily, using a small metal knob to tighten a spring within the watch.

Wrist watches are popular today, but the first watches were either carried in hand or suspended on a chain. The chain could be worn like a necklace or pinned to the garment, with the watch tucked into a nearby pocket - thus, the title of pocket watch. Pocket watches were the most popular type of watch from the time of their invention until shortly after World War II.

In popular culture, pocket watches have come to symbolize times past; movies often depict Victorian gentlemen, politicians, early American railway conductors, and well to do men in the American West or gold rush Alaska as carrying pocket watches. The White Rabbit in Disney's 1951 cartoon Alice in Wonderland carried such a watch - but he was still unable to make it on time.

Steam punk art and jewelry - which depicts a Victorian alternate reality in which mechanical steam power rather than electricity and digital devices became the dominant technology - often use pocket watches and their gears, or internal workings. A painting by surrealist artist Salvador Dali, entitled The Persistence of Memory, depicts a number of pocket watches melting upon a bleak background.

Remember, the position of these lines determines the time shown on the watch. Draw a long, narrow diamond at the end of each line, and shade it.
